Quang Tran and Hau Ha show their class in Lam Dong

Their race victories were anticipated, but the manner in which they did was still impressive. Quang Tran and Hau Ha made it look so easy the 70km Lam Dong Trail seemed nothing but and advanced training session for them. Both Vietnamese elite runners from the Mude Factory Team did run their own pace, however, resulting in Quang Train crossing the line first in 7h44 with Hau Ha second overall in 8h15. The Lam Dong Trail in Dalat was a Candidate Race for the 2023 ATM Championship calendar, and did leave a fine impression.

The 70 km race started at 4 am just outside the city centre of Dalat in Vietnam’s Central Highlands with a solid field of runners. Very quickly the Mude Factory Team Trio that also includes Nhon Trong, who returned from a complicated foot injury, set the pace up front. Others such as Hoang Huu Thang, Bui Van Da, Stephen Barkey and Thailand’s Guntawee Tiwapong already had to appreciate a gap of over 30 minutes at km 18. Interestingly the three teammates ran by themselves, following personal training plans with a view to their bigger objectives next month that include the ATM Championship Final in Philippines on 17 December.

Hau Ha gradually lost terrain vis-a-vis Quang Tran, also due to some stomach cramps halfway in the race. Nhon Trong in his first run for 26 days did remarkably well and at CP 5 was still just 5 minutes behind the female star from Sapa. The injury-caused lack of training and heavy rainfall around lunchtime would slow him down in the final 20 km, but his second place in the men’s was never in danger. Guntawee Tiwapong in fact had arguably the best ATM race of his season and scored third place on the podium, ahead of Hoang Huu Thang and Bui Van Da. The latter two are also qualified for Team Vietnam in the ATM Final next month.

Quang Tran admitted he felt very comfortable all race and showed that he is one of the men to beat on Mount Apo for the ATM title. One caveat, he has scheduled to run a 100 miles race the weekend before, too. Not so for Hau Ha, who is determined to test herself as a female trail runner for real on Philippines’ highest mountain, competing against co-favourites Ezster Csillag and Vanja Cnops. Until today, even coach Guim Valles admits we have not seen her real limits yet in competition. Even when she beat Gaetan Morizur, Nhon Trong, Tomohiro Mizukoshi and others at the Vietnam Mountain Marathon 100k race last September, she didn’t have to go into the pain cave. Both her and Quang Tran are THE faces of the incredible growth that trail running in Vietnam has witnessed over the last five years. It would be the first time a Vietnamese runner becomes Asia Trail Master Champion, in fact none has ever made it onto the season’s podium.

Lam Dong Trail and Dalat Ultra Trail (the ATM points race in March every year) share the same race venue at the Valley of Love, but the race courses are different. Participants were treated with a great arena setting and welcoming dinner, amongst other benefits. Most runners who did both argue that the older event has a long distance course that is arguably a touch more technical in nature, and agree there is a place for both events on the ATM Championship calendar.

Lam Dong Candidate Race with Vietnam's finest

This weekend we have the final ATM Candidate Race of the 2022 season in Dalat, Vietnam. Lam Dong Trail is hoping to secure a spot on next year’s Asia Trail Master Championship calendar and as a new trail event organiser keen to leave a great impression. What might help with that is the presence of Vietnam’s two greatest trail stars of the moment: Quang Tran and, of course, Hau Ha.

On the menu we find four genuine race categories with the 70k as the longest distance. Both Quang Tran and Hau Ha are signed up for this one. Most likely they will not get a lot of competition and will it be a solid training exercise for their bigger goals in December, including the ATM Championship Final on Mount Apo on 17 December.

The Lam Dong Trail has the same start/finish venue as the Dalat Ultra Trail, but the running course is different. Dalat being a wonderful place to run with its cooler climate, most runners won’t mind returning to the same place anyway. The biggest hillclimb comes right after the start at 4 am, and Asia Trail Master will be reporting live from the 70k race from start to finish. Just tune in to our usual channels.

Lam Dong Trail new Candidate Race in Vietnam

We are happy to announce the Lam Dong Trail in Dalat, Vietnam, as a new ATM Candidate Race from 11 to 13 November 2022. Organised by VietnamJoy and the Green Hat Joint Stock Company, the new event features several race categories of which the 70k is the flagship. Host venue of the event is the Valley of Love, not far from Dalat City.

Lam Dong is the name of the province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, already very popular among trail runners due to the moderate climate and cooler temperatures. The event is part of a bigger community initiative called VietnamJoy, which was born with the desire to bring people back to nature through forest paths, climbing waterfalls or magical cloud-piercing peaks. Running terrain is not only a test of the toughness of the body, but also a connection with nature. Every breath, step by step opens up every beautiful scenery of Vietnam.

Despite the estimated elevation gain of 2850 hm, the terrain in and around Dalat is known to be quite runable. November marks the start of the colder season, and runners will be treated by mystic foggy landscapes in vast hilly pine forests. If 70k is too long, runners can also choose between 45km, 21km or 10km race categories.

Dalat is well-connected via air and road from Ho Chi Minh City. It is a tourism destination in its own right, which has plenty of accommodation options and things to see and experience.

All detailed information can be found on the official website, in both Vietnamese and English.

Perak Ultra: Andy Lee & Chong Mei Tze win Candidate Race

Andy Lee Chong Chi and Chong Mei Tze are the two winners of quite a runable Perak Ultra last weekend, the next ATM Candidate Race in Malaysia, organised by the crew of The Great Malaya Trail. The event featured several race categories of which the 100k attracted most attention. Heavy rainfall preceeding the event, however, forced a number of reroutes away from the trails deeper in the rainforest . As such, total distance was about 92km and a much more runable route with quite a bit of tarmac road, which played into the hands of ultra road specialist Chong Mei Tze. She led the race basically all day and won ahead of Siokhar Lim and Norlela Ismail in a very solid 11h06 and fourth overall. Siokhar Lim is a busy bee these days again, having just scored 3rd in last week’s Jagoi Heritage Run in Sarawak, too. Clearly in very good shape with a finish time of 11h27, the technical trail runner and ATM Grandmaster will be a big favourite in her home race next month, Ultimate Trails of Penang (UTOP).

The men’s race turned out to be very exciting with two runners going head-to-head. Japan’s Atsushi Ito and Andy Lee Chong Chi. Initially, Ito appeared to be the fastest of the two, but Lee Chong Chi came back and managed to drop Ito in the latter stages to win in 10h04, three minutes ahead. Impressive running by the duo. Seiji Morofuji completed the podium in third 50 minutes back, also one week after Jagoi.

Special thanks to our ATM reporter in Perak, Mark Jinmin.

The men’s podium: Andy Lee, Atsushi Ito and Seiji Morofuji

The women’s podium: Chong Mei Tze, Siokhar Lim and Norlela Ismail

Milton Amat beats Kitamura in great dual in Bung Jagoi

The first ATM Candidate Race in Sarawak on the Malaysian side of Borneo delivered a great classic dual between Hisashi Kitamura and Milton Amat. On paper, the Jagoi Heritage Trail Run of 50km and 1250 hm looked ideal for the Japanese to assert his characteristics as a runner, but Sabah’s Milton Amat turned out not have any issues at all with the set pace and almost made his victory look easy by outgunning Kitamura in the final technical descent to the finish line. A significant psychological victory for Amat, or should we say ‘blow’ for Kitamura, in light of the upcoming Borneo TMBT Ultra 100 - one of the highlights of the ATM Championship season, and a race Kitamura has targettedr to win after a narrow defeat by the same Milton Amat in 2019.

The Jagoi 50k race was not a first edition, but the first time the competitive field was robust. The local organisers and local village community were also delighted to see some of ATM’s top stars taking part in their race - even though no points were up for grabs as it was a candidate race. It rained heavily the afternoon and evening before the race, which turned some of the trail sections muddy and more technical than previously anticipated. Ireland’s Malachy Kirwan - still relatively new at trail running - was struggling with the conditions and in the end had no answer to the pace set by Kitamura from the start. The Karate Kit was quick out of the blocks and tried to put pressure on Milton Amat straightaway. However, the Sabahan remained visibly relaxed and had no issue letting his classic trail rival go in front by 20-30 seconds. For about 20km they were joined by a third runner, in fact. Mark Steacy, also from Ireland and residing in Kuching, was the surprise of the day. Eventually Steacy had to slow down a bit, and saw Wilsen Singgin still catching him and overtaking him in that final descent for third place. Nevertheless, a great new name who will also compete at TMBT 100. Up front, Kitamura felt it coming at the last aid station before going up the longest and toughest hillclimb. Amat was still right on his tail (see video on facebook). Amat took over towards the summit and used his technical downhill superiority to win the race.

The women’s race was dominated by local hero Sally Yap and Sabah’s Mailin Salungin. Both runners stayed side-by-side all race and decided not to sprint it out for the overall win (both won their respective age groups). Afterwards, Salungin was all praise for the youngster Sally Yap, who is one of the new names in Malaysia post-covid. After winning BUTM 100, she will also try to score TMBT 100 in three weeks’ time, and in so doing secure her spot for Team Malaysia at the ATM Championship Final in Philippines on 17 December. An impressive third place in Jagoi went to Grandmaster Siokhar Lim, who was coming very close to the lead duo on the final hillclimb. 50k and 1250 hm are peanuts numbers for Siokhar, who typically excels in the long and tough mountains ultras, but yesterday she showed her general running pace has increased, too. Celeste Teo, third at MMTF 2021, also looked solid in taking fourth place yesterday.

You can replay the race of the leaders via our ATM DTA platform here: (laptop/desktop required)

On our Facebook page, you can find several videos and photos of the race, too.

Top runners present at Jagoi Heritage Run

There have been quite a few ATM Candidates in Malaysia already this season and this Sunday we have the next one, but it’s a rather unique one. The T8 Jagoi Heritage Run is the first trail event with an ATM logo in Sarawak. Originally scheduled for 2020, finally this event can take place roughly one hour south of Kuching. Jagoi features a 50k main race that has attracted some very strong runners from the region. Hisashi Kitamura and Milton Amat, for example, are set to race each other in what could be a great teaser for the big Borneo TMBT 100 clash in three weeks from now. Yet, Jagoi is only half that distance, and seemingly more runable than TMBT with just 1250 hm. Kitamura may thus have an advantage on paper this weekend, but for both ATM stars it is likely to be just a psychological game this weekend. And when two dogs fight for one bone, a third may run away with it. WIlsen Singgin is also at the starting line on Sunday, and also Singapore-based Irishman Malachy Kirwan. For ultra distance specialist Singgin the Jagoi 50 might be a bit too short to assert himself, but for Kirwan this distance and elevation chart looks ideal. Coming from road running, Kirwan suffered a knock of the hammer at the BTR Challenge in Bali to finish fourth, but he will have learnt from that experience and might as well put his name firmly in trail runners’ minds this weekend.

Also the women’s 50k will be an interesting one to follow. Home runner Sally Yap is present, and so are Mailin Salungin, Siokhar Lim, Laslin Sarawi and Celeste Teo - to name a few.

ATM will be covering the race live from Sarawak on our usual channels, and also via our live tracking platform.

Home favourite Sally Yap, number 1 in ATM Malaysia Ranking, will be keen to deliver a good run this Sunday

Kokol Ultra a new ATM Candidate in Sabah

We are happy to announce Kokol Ultra as the next ATM Candidate Race in Sabah, Malaysia, on 15 October 2022. Kokol Ultra is an inaugural event starting from Kokol Haven and featuring a delightful course to run, with several stunning viewpoints including Kampung Lawa Mandau, Kampung Kebayau, Kampung Natai , Kampung Poring Poring & Kampung Kokol. The longest race category is 50km, making this event a great opportunity for faster legs to showcase themselves, while ultra specialists can run it as warm-up for their next ultra long race. There’s also 30K and 10K options for the less ambitious. Kokol Ultra 50k will be flagged off at 6 am.

Elevation gain is over 2200hm, which is not extreme but the toughest part of the race is the second half, so it will be crucial to manage your efforts well in the beginning. The course map and elevation profile is below.

The Ibis Styles Hotel in Kota Kinabalu serves as an event hotel, from where shuttle busses will take runners to Kokol Haven. It is also possible to stay overnight in Kokol Haven.

The event is organised by Expertise Event Management.

Perak Ultra a new ATM Candidate

We are happy to announce Perak Ultra in the famous Lenggong Valley as the next official ATM Candidate Race in Malaysia on the weekend of 3/4 September. This will be the first ever Ultra event in Lenggong Valley, known as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for past 10 years, and also as National Geo Park Site. The trail routes will go through magnificient places such as caves, durian orchards, deer farm, the Raban Lake and many more. Organised by the Comrades, who also bring you a.o. The Great Malaya Trail, Perak Ultra will offer several race categories. Flagship category is the 100K, which will have minimum 70% of offroad - the requirement to join ATM. There’s also 50k, 30k and 20k races but note these have at least 50% of road in them.

Registrations as usual go via Checkpoint Spot: https://checkpointspot.asia/event/perak-ultra . The race pack collection will be here: Dewan Tasik Raban Resort, Lenggong, Perak

ATM Candidate: Bali Ultra Trail with Arief Wismoyono

The second ATM Candidate Race of the weekend takes place in Bali, Indonesia. It’s the Bali Ultra Trail, an inaugural event originally scheduled to take place in 2020, but then postponed until now due to covid. The event mimicks somewhat the BTR Challenge from earlier in the year with a loop on and around the popular volcano Gunung Batur, but extends it with an out-and-back to the beach in North Bali to produce an ultra distance of 80km. The event, directed by ATM Grandmaster Dendi Dwitiandi, has been able to attract several of Indonesia’s star trail runners, such as Arief Wismoyono, Taofik Hidayat, Thimo Kilberth and Shindy Patricia. These are all spread out over 3 categories, however, with Thimo and Pablo Diago Gonzales, for example, opting for the 25K race on Sunday morning. On the longest 80k, Wismoyono is the top favourite, but there’s also Fandhi Achmad, Dzaki Wardana and Rachmat Septiyanto. On the 50K, all eyes will be on Hidayat, but there’s also Alan Maulana and a lot of unknown runners who could cause a surprise. Shindy will be the woman-to-beat, but there’s also Sianti Candra on the start list. Ruth Theresia features on it as well, but has reportedly decided to save her energy for the ATM Championship points race Jember Hills Classic in two weeks from now.

One month after winning Mantra Summits, Arief Wismoyono is again the top favourite in Bali Ultra Trail

ATM Candidate: Transnaning Ultra Challenge with Milton & Wilsen

There’s many ATM Candidate Races in Malaysia this year and the next one in line is Transnaning Ultra Challenge in Tampin. This is quite a famous hiking and trekking route, renowned for its considerable degree of technicality. 2017 ATM Champion Steven Ong is the race director and designed a true challenge for ultra runners. The Transnaning loop is 33 km long and participants can choose to run one to five loops, the five loops measuring therefore approx 100 miles with an elevation gain of nearly 12000 hm. On paper, the toughest endurance trail challenge in the country therefore. It’s the kind of challenge for the selected few, of course, and most participants in the event content themselves with one or two loops. Amongst those who will attempt the five loops are last week’s winners of the Kadamaian Adventure Ultra 70, Milton Amat and Wilsen Singgin. Both have ample experience over the 100 miles distance, and let’s not forget that Wilsen Singgin won the Ultimate 230 of Ultra Trail Chiang Rai in 2019.

The Transnaning loop is renowned to be highly technical

Sumatran runners impress at Bukit Lawang

Two ATM Candidate Races took place simultaneously in Indonesia and Philippines last weekend and both with considerable success and appeal for next year’s ATM Championship calendar. At Sierra Madre Trail Ultra 75, Larry Apolinario beat Elmer Retolado and Sherlyn Fugaban asserted herself as the new Queen of the Rizal. At Bukit Lawang, local Sumatran runners proved they can run trail, too, on an interesting course with impressive support from the local community and the indigenous inhabitants of the rainforest: the orang utans.

From the get-go, established race favourites Arief Wismoyono and Thimo Kilberth were put under pressure by the quick pace of local runner Ongki Saleh. The first half of the 42k long Bukit Lawang Jungle Trail is very runable and certainly not very technical, allowing for relatively easy sub-five minute kilometres. However, the second half is an entirely different story. Runners enter a thick rainforest on narrow single trails and have to negotiate two very steep ‘bukits’ or hills. The descent of which are just as steep and technical. Thimo and Arief were therefore not yet alarmed when they heard Ongi Saleh had distanced them by nearly ten minutes at km 22. However, the local athlete, seemingly inexperienced, was stronger and more resilient than expected. Ongi Saleh lost ‘only’ half of his advantage on the bukits, and came home solo in first place. A brilliant victory that was celebrated extensively by his friends at the impressive start/finish arena. In an intense battle for second place, 2015 ATM Champion Arief Wismoyono caught up again with Thimo Kilberth in the final few kilometres, but the Bali-based German had a little extra fuel left in the tank for the final slope uphill to the finish line. Two weeks after his third place at the Batur Trail Challenge, Kilberth proves again he is in the best running shape of his life. In the women’s 42k, a young woman from Aceh drew all the attention. Ina Lydia Utari arrived at the halfway point in fifth place overall, and just like Ongi Saleh in the men’s did not lose a lot of ground in the technical second part. Nice to see runners from Sumatra doing so well, and we hope to see more of them in the ATM Championship points races coming up this season.

The same applies for Sherlyn Fugaban in the Philippines after two convincing victories in the Rizal mountains in the past month. Fugaban outpaced Cecile Wael and Cheryl Navarro last Saturday on the tough 75k course of Sierra Madre. The first Filipino points race this season is MUSPO 100 in Budkidnon, Mindanao. Curious whether she can open her points account there with a full whack of 500 points. Fugaban is increasingly seen as a potential favourite for this year’s women’s ATM title. The returning Aggy Sabanal ran a solid race and even held second place until the halfway point, when she missed a marker and lost too much time to still feature up front in the race.

At Akyathlon 2019, Elmer Retolado had the better of Larry Apolinario, but the table got reversed at Sierra Madre 2022. The two of them were in a league of their own, but this time Apolinario had a little extra to take a great win. Anthony Calixterio grabbed third on the podium.

Sherpa vs Vietnam's Finest at Cau Dat Farm
Caudatfarm+logo.jpg

The 9 Dragons Ultra in Hong Kong has been cancelled, unfortunately, and so no ATM Championship or Grandmaster Quest points will be handed out this weekend. All our attention therefore shifts to the 2021 ATM Candidate Race that is also scheduled for this Sunday: Cau Dat Farm Ultra in Vietnam.

The corona virus situation is currently affecting a lot of countries already, but - touch wood - in the south of Vietnam there is no issue yet and the event can go ahead as planned. Cau Dat Farm Ultra is organised by the well-drilled team of Race Jungle led by Ms Tu Nguyen, who also set up the Tam Dao Mountain Trail a few years ago. On the programme are several race categories with the 55k as the main race featuring several of Vietnam’s finest and former Asia Trail Master champion Alessandro Sherpa.

The Singapore-based Italian decided a few weeks ago to replace 9 Dragons in favour of Cau Dat Farm Ultra as a heavy daily workload following his great second place at Tahura Trail in Indonesia prevented him from focusing on the very tough 2-stager in Hong Kong. However, Sherpa will be challenged on the trails near Dalat. Since MMTF in December, everyone who follows the ATM tour knows who Nhon Trong is and the talented youngster is looking forward to running with the 2018 champion. For Nhon Trong, 84km was the longest and toughest trail race ever and he finished without pressure in 6th place. That was one hour and fifteen minutes behind Sherpa, but Nhon Trong is comfortable with his speed on a shorter and more runable 55k course.

Another Vietnamese runner who could create an upset is Tan Hi. Hailing from Lam Dong, where he is a member of the Athletics Team. Podiuming in several local road races recently, Tan Hi is stepping up a level to compete with Nhon Trong and Alessandro Sherpa on the trails around the oldest tea farm in Vietnam, established and developed for nearly 100 years. In the women’s race we are happy to be seeing new faces, even when Thi Hai Yen Vo is probably the woman-to-beat.

Taking place early in the year, runners can expect cool Spring weather in green tea hills and immense flower fields, with gently sloping paths and unspoilt forests that adorn this plateau. It is also the cherry blossom season, blooming on both sides of the road, sometimes intermingling with a few white flower clusters.

ATM has Mark on the spot at Cau Dat Farm Ultra and we will be reporting live about the race developments throughout the weekend via our Facebook page as usual.
