Shift focus to Season IX: calendar updates

The 2023 ATM Championship has only just reached its conclusion and now we are already looking at the start of the next one. As the 2024 ATM Final is projected to take place in mid-September, Season IX kicks off this weekend already with a doubleheader featuring two very well-known events: Izu Trail Journey in Japan and the Mount Apo Sky Race in Philippines. Points will be scored on the 70km (Izu) and 100km (Apo) that are valid for the 2024 ATM Championship and Grandmaster Quest. The basic regulations for the championship remain the same, i.e. the top 25 of the men’s and women’s races score points. Race previews of both events will be published tomorrow.

Popular demand has encouraged us to move the championship final more forward on the calendar and in any case away from the very busy mid-November to mid-December timeframe. While this means Season IX wil be shorter, already 20 points race events feature on the current calendar and another five are about to be confirmed within the next month, too. Please stay tuned for updates on our ATM Web and ATM Facebook first and foremost.

A shorter season, ATM Final in Q3 of 2024

We are happy to present the preliminary event calendar of the next Asia Trail Master Championship season until the end of the first semester in 2024. The big change compared to the past is the fact that the ATM Championship Final is scheduled to be brought foward significantly and take place in Q3 - the third quarter of 2024. As a consequence, the next - ninth - season - Season IX - will begin immediately after the conclusion of this year’s championship early December.

Izu Trail Journey in Japan and the Mount Apo Sky Race in Philippines will both open the new season on the weekend of 9/10 December. - one week after the ATM Championship Final in Central Java, Indonesia - the Siksorogo Lawu Ultra.

15 points race weekends until the end of June are on the programme so far. That is in line with our standard target of 30 weekends per year. Please note that several standard entries, e.g. in Thailand and South Korea, have not yet been added to the calendar as no formal communication on 2024 dates have as yet been communicated to us. Interesting to point out is the entry in January of the Vietnam Trail Marathon, organised by the same team as VMM, and the return of The 9 Dragons Ultra in Hong Kong in mid-February. In Malaysia, we are scheduled to have a points race for the very first time in Sarawak, celebrating the recent surge in popularity of the sport over there as well as the excellent performances of athletes such as Sally Yap, Siet Fah Lim and Celeste Teo. Laos is poised to have one more event on the calendar alongside the V Trail. Bolaven Trail was a Candidate Race just before the covid pandemic and is now set to return. We are also happy to see Brunei coming back to the ATM Championship calendar for the first time since the now defunct Beach Bunch Trail Challenge in 2018. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more additions and news regarding the Season IX calendar.

The 2024 ATM Championship Final will be announced at a later stage. Discussions are taking place with two event organisers in two different countries.

Only minor changes to ATM 2023 points regulations

We are delighted that the 2022 season VII took place without major hiccups in the aftermath of the covid-19 pandemic. A few events still could not take place, and may in fact never return. It was a difficult year for many organisers, also under ATM, but it all concluded with two new wonderful champions, Arnie Macaneras (Philippines) and Hau Ha (Vietnam), with Team Malaysia scoring the inaugural team championship win.

We changed the ATM Championship regulations for the 2022 season and have a winner-takes-all race with qualified runners in national country teams, which turned out to be a big success on the basis of feedback received from all parties: runners, organisers, fans and sponsors. In 2023 we will continue down this chosen path.

So, in 2023, runners will again score the usual points in designated races at each event on our ATM calendar. The best performing runners will be invited to join their national country team for the Asia Trail Master Championship Final in December 2023. Per country maximum five male and five female runners will get the honour.

The key points

  • The way in which runners score ATM Championship points does not change, except that just the top 25 men and top 25 finishers in an official ATM points race collect 100 ‘finisher’ points, plus x number of ‘performance’ points according to the usual points table). In essence, male and female race winners go home with 500 points in their bags. Second place gets 450, third place 425 and so on until rank 25.

  • In trail running events there’s typically several race distance categories. Normally, the longest race is the one to focus on as the A-race for the ATM Championship. However, this is not always the case! It can be that there are two A-races at the same event. Therefore, always check our race overview to find out which race offers how many Championship points.

  • One stubborn misconception is still that you must do long ultras to become ATM champion. Not true: you can select medium distance races of 40 to 70k and get just as many points as for a long ultra of 100k or more. The best example of this is Veronika Vadovicova, who became ATM champion in 2019 although her longest race was “only” 84 km. Runners choose the race distance that fits their qualities best. The ATM Final race aims to compromise between medium and long ultra, with a race distance of approx 75 km.

  • In 2023, again due to the ongoing pandemic, we will work with a “four-best-count” system. Only a runner’s best four race results will count for his or her points total before the ATM Championship Final in December. In other words: even if you run 10 ATM races in 2023, only your best 4 results will be retained in the points ranking.

  • The bonus points system remains unchanged. The Abroad Bonus (50 points for finishing at least 1 race outside of one’s resident country) and the 100 Miles+ Bonus (25 points) remain.

  • Penalty points. Organising the ATM Championship Final is a big effort and is projected to be in the interest of everyone in the Asian trail running scene. Runners who do not turn up despite being qualified to be part of their country’s national team will be penalised by a symbolic 100 points in the final ATM points ranking of 2023 (except proven illness/injury).

  • Joint finishers: An important distinction will be made as of the second quarter of each season, i.e. 1 April (now as of 1 April 2023): If runners cross the finish line together hand-in-hand, their ranking relative to each other at the last timing checkpoint before the race finish will be consulted to determine who scores the most performance points.
If no distinction can be made, both runners will receive the points linked to the lowest of the two positions. E.g. joint winners will not get 500 points, but 450 points equivalent to 2nd place.

We also like camaraderie and people enjoying successes together, yet the ATM Championship is a sporting competition and we must avoid a situation whereby, late in the season, a joint finish of two or more championship contenders could be done deliberately for tactical reasons.

The ATM Championship Final

The 2023 Asia Trail Master Championship Final will be a winner-takes-the-title race as in 2022. The male and female finalists who cross the finish line first will be the new ATM Champions.

However, you do need to qualify to be able to take part in that last race, the ATM Final. In each country, maximum five male and five female runners who score most ATM points during the year will qualify and be invited to enter their country’s National Team for the Asia Trail Master Championship Final.

The Final is therefore projected to be a race with selected elites-only, who are members of National Teams. Maximum five male runners and five females. Apart from the Individual Championship there will also be a Team Championship. The latter will be based on the accumulated finish times of the best three male runners and best three female runners in each team (= 6 finishing times in total)

The number of runners per team is subject to there being an ATM points race in the country.

  • Minimum 1 ATM points race —> 5 male runners, 5 female runners

  • no ATM points race —> 4 male, 4 female

Runners who are ranked 6th to 8th in their country are the eligible reserves in case anyone in the top 5 cannot take part in the Final.

ATM Championship Final Event: The venue of the 2023 ATM Championship Final will be announced soon. The projected weekend date is 2/3 December 2023.

Expats working and residing in Asia: if the expat is an Asian passport holder, he will represent his native country and not his resident country. If the expat has a European or American passport, or any other non-Asian passport, he will be eligible to join Team Asia Expat. Exception: expats who have resided in one and the same Asian country for 8 years or more can join their resident country team.

Minimum requirement of 2 ATM race finishes: runners in the top 5 of their country ranking must have completed minimum 2 ATM races to be eligible to join the ATM Championship Final and represent their country.

Wild cards: former ATM Champions get a wild card to take part in the 2023 Final, provided they have scored points in minimum two ATM points races during 2023. Also, the team of the host country can at any times be represented by 5 male and 5 female runners, provided these have scored points in minimum two ATM points races during 2023.

Equal points: if two runners have the same points total in the country ranking, a distinction will first be made on the basis of highest ranking obtained in a race (e.g. a 3rd place race result is better than a 5th place race result). If that still does not divide them, the number of kilometres run in the relevant races will determine who receives the highest place in the country ranking.

Hisashi Kitamura and Hau Ha points leaders in 2022

For the first time ever this year, the Asia Trail Master Championship was decided in a winner-takes-the-title race between qualified runners in national country teams of maximum five men and five women. Those runners qualified by scoring the most ATM points throughout the 2022 season: an easy, transparent, fair and non-arbitrary system. Arnie Maceneras from Team Philippines and Hau Ha from Team Vietnam were the strongest runners in the ATM Championship Final and were crowned as the new champions accordingly. Nevertheless, it’s nice to take a look at the final points scoring table of 2022 as well. With our 50-point ‘abroad bonus’ added, for running at least one race outside your country of residence, Hau Ha is also clearly the number one in the women’s ranking as she remained unbeaten in four ATM races. Her masterpiece was of course winning the 100km of Vietnam Mountain Marathon overall. During the ATM Final on Mt Apo, Hau Ha showed mental resilience, too, after a difficult start and finding herself chasing another woman for the first time: Vanja Cnops, who herself scored 3 ATM wins in 2022 and is a great second in the final ranking. Ultimately, however, Hau Ha still put a lot of distance between herself and the others with an incredible descent of Mt Apo, and it went to show that the exciting Vietnamese newcomer on the scene is ready to go global next year. Cnops is second in the ATM points ranking, ahead of another great Southeast Asian newbie, Sally Yap from Sarawak in Malaysia.

In the men’s ranking, however, it is Japan’s Hisashi Kitamura who finds himself on the number 1 spot. The ‘Karate Kit’ collected 2000 ATM points in 2022, with three race victories (Echigo Country Trail, Cameron Ultra and The Punisher) and a 2nd place in Borneo TMBT 100. Those were his best four results that counted for the ranking. He also was 3rd in Vietnam Jungle Marathon and BUTM 100, 18th in Izu Trail Journey and 5th in the Mt Apo Sky Race. All in all, it was Kitamura’s best season ever, even though a performance dip in the autumn and a bad spell of covid before the Final made most people forget that. Kitamura was happy with fifth in the final race, on a course that was not his. Heading the ATM’s final ranking is a nice price of comfort for him, ahead of a year that may see some changes in his professional career that could also impact his running ambitions. Yet, Kitamura will play a role again in 2023, no doubt. Sabah’s Milton Amat also had his best season ever, to the point a lot of people feared he would run totally out of gas by the ATM Final. He came just five minutes short of catching Macaneras in the Championship-deciding race, after the Filipino had dropped him earlier in the last section of the Mt Apo summit attack. Amat is second in the ATM points ranking, ahead of Macaneras.

Looking at the Top 10 below, there’s a great mixture between race winners, multiple podium placers and consistent points-scorers.

Congratulations to everyone, have a smooth rest and a great end-of-year party before reloading the batteries for Season VIII of the Asia Trail Master Championship series starting at UTKC in Thailand on 21 January. Everyone’s points tally goes back to zero and a whole new story begins!

Updated: ATM 2023 opens with UTKC on 21 January

[This is an update of an earlier post published on 6 october]

Season VII of the Asia Trail Master Championship series is currently in full swing and the tension towards the winner-takes-all Final race between qualified runners in national country teams has been building up gradually. Nevertheless, the start of the new Season VIII is not that far away neither. As usual, there’s five weeks between the end and the beginning. The ATM event calendar for 2023 is taking shape, not as fast as we would like but it seems the nature of today’s world to have a shorter horizon to work with. In fact, several event organisers are still waiting for official permits by their local or regional authorities. In total, the ATM Championship calendar will again feature between 25 and maximum 30 points races in which runners can score points for the Championship qualification and/or for their Grandmaster Quest. The complete calendar is building up gradually, and we are happy to confirm two more points races in the earlier part of the season.

The new season will begin with four weekends-in-a-row. Thailand has the honour of having the opener with the classic Ultra Trail Koh Chang - UTKC - event in the south of the country and reachable via Bangkok, on the weekend of 21-22 January 2023. As usual, both the 100km and the 70km race categories will offer ATM points. One week later we move to Bandung in West Java, Indonesia, for Tahura Trail. Another classic and very popular for trail runners who prefer a shorter race distance (42 km) or for those wishing to prep themselves for longer races afterwards. Going into February, we find the V Trail in Laos on the schedule. A new date in the early season for the tough and technical race of 85km around Vang Vieng in the south of the country. From Laos we will head to Manila for the first Filipino race of the 2023 season and it’s a new entry on our Championship calendar: Santa Ines Mountain Adventure. A pretty spicy 80km in the Rizal mountains east of the Manila metropole, a successful Candidate Race last April.

After this quartet of events, we will have a break for two weeks until the new Candidate Race in Brunei, the Simpur Ultra Run on 25 February. Looking into early March, Dalat Ultra Trail will be the first Vietnamese event on the calendar on the first weekend of March. Dalat is a very popular destination for trail runners in the country, but also for South East Asians in general as the climatic conditions are favourable. After Dalat, we are rapidly approaching fasting month, which typically implies a more quiet period on the event calendar. A note on BUTM in Malaysia, the event will be announced in due course, and is set for a complete redesign AFTER the fasting month. A second Vietnamese event is set to enter the series in April. Confirmed for early May is the second Filipino races of the 2023 season: Sierra Madre Trail Ultra 75. A Candidate Race in 2022, this event caters for elite runners in particular and takes place in another area of the Rizal Mountains east of Manila. Later in May, we can also expect the first Malaysian points race of the season as well as the quite special Bukit Lawang Orang Utan Trail in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

Stay tuned for more updates on the 2023 ATM Calendar coming very soon.

2022: Regulation changes for the ATM Championship

We made an attempt, but alas. The merged 2020-21 ATM Championship resulted into nothing as the global covid-19 pandemic raged on and made any international trail running competition in Asia impossible. Still, we give kudos to the male and female Championship points leaders at the time of cancellation, Trung Nguyen and Julian Duong Thi Nguyen, both based in Vietnam. They deserve this mentioning, as both runners exceeded expectations and we sincerely hope they both can continue their upward trend, competitively speaking, into the new season.

2022 is edging closer and we are indeed not throwing the towel in the ring. The Asia Trail Master Championship series goes on!

Recently, several organisers have announced their forthcoming events will take place, or they have been confident enough to open registration. Of course, no Asian country is out of the woods yet and covid-19 is unlikely to disappear soon. International, even regional, leisure travel is expected to remain difficult for at least the first quarter of 2022, possibly going even beyond that. Most of the freshly announced events will feature domestic residents-only. As a consequence of this, we have been compelled to make adjustments to the traditional ATM event schedule and to the points allocation system. The biggest change is that the national country rankings become much more important, as they will determine who gets a spot in the National Team to enter and take part in the Asia Trail Master Final in December 2022!

The key points

The way in which runners score ATM Championship points does not change compared to the past. All finishers in an official ATM points race still collect 100 ‘finisher’ points, plus x number of ‘performance’ points according to the usual points table (printed below). In essence, male and female race winners go home with 500 points in their bags.

In trail running events there’s typically several race distance categories. Normally, the longest race is the one to focus on as the A-race for the ATM Championship. However, this is not always the case! It can be that there are two A-races at the same event. Therefore, always check our race overview to find out which race offers how many Championship points.

One stubborn misconception is still that you must do long ultras to become ATM champion. Not true: you can select medium distance A-races of 40 to 70k and get just as many points as for a long ultra of 100k or more. The best example of this is Veronika Vadovicova, who became ATM champion in 2019 although her longest race was “only” 84 km. Runners choose the race distance that fits their qualities best.

In 2022, again due to the ongoing pandemic, we will work with a “four-best-count” system. Not five. Only a runner’s best four race results will count for his or her points total before the ATM Championship Final in December.

Also the bonus points system is slightly amended for 2022. The Abroad Bonus (50 points for finishing at least 1 race outside of one’s resident country) and the 100 Miles+ Bonus (25 points) remain. On the other hand, we will not assign any SuperTrail labels to events next season, nor respective bonus points to finishing runners of these events. It’s been two years, the scene has changed, and as far as we are concerned, any organiser who manages to get his event on in 2022 deserves the “Super” label.

Asia Trail Master Championship Final

The 2022 Asia Trail Master Championship Final will be different than it was before. Again, the corona pandemic has forced us to rethink the concept. The reality is that certainly in the first quarter of next year, runners in quite a few places - take Hong Kong as an example - will be unable to travel anywhere, or will find that ‘real’ trail running event organisers still do not get the necessary permits from the authorities. This makes it impossible for runners living in that situation to play any prominent role in the Championship as it used to be, with an accumulative points system.

Therefore, the 2022 Asia Trail Master Championship Final will be decided on a Winner-Takes-All basis!

The latter will be based on the accumulated finish times of the best three male runners and the best three female runners in each team.

The number of runners per team is subject to the number of ATM points races in that country.

  • More than 3 ATM points races —> 5 male, 5 female

  • 3 ATM points races —> 4 male, 4 female

  • Less than 3 ATM points races —> 3 male, 3 female

The date and venue of the 2022 ATM Championship Final will be decided in due course.

Additional Notes/FAQ

  • When there is more than one race distance at the same event

If an event offers two, three or more race distances, runners should check which of the race distance(s) offer ATM Championship points. Usually it is the longest race, but not always, and maybe two race distances have the same status.

  • Multiple-day stage trail races

Performance points will be awarded according to the final overall classification, not per stage. This is important for The 9 Dragons Ultra in Hong Kong, for instance.

  • Joint finishers

An important distinction will be made as of the second quarter of each season, i.e. 1 April (now as of 1 April 2022): If runners cross the finish line together hand-in-hand, their ranking relative to each other at the last timing checkpoint before the race finish will be consulted to determine who scores the most performance points.

We also like camaraderie and people enjoying successes together, yet the ATM Championship is a sporting competition and we must avoid a situation whereby, late in the season, a joint finish of two or more championship contenders could be done deliberately for tactical reasons.

  • ATM Championship Ranking before the ATM Final

Four-best-count system: only the best 4 point-results of each runner obtained during the calendar year will be taken into account for the selection into the National Teams for the ATM Final. This means if a runner has done six races, his two worst results will be deleted and not taken into account for his points total. Even if you run 13 ATM races, only your best 4 results matter.

In the last race of the ATM season - the ATM Final - all finalists will score additional points according to their ranking in the race result.

  • Abroad Bonus

Runners who score points in 3 ATM races get a 50-point bonus if 1 of the 3 races took place outside the runner’s country of residence at the time of the race

  • Joint points total in final Championship Ranking

If two or more runners have the same points total at the end of the year: preference goes to the runner who won the most recent direct confrontation between the relevant runners. If this does not separate the relevant runners, we check what their highest points score in 1 single race was and how many times that score was obtained (eg. three race wins against 1 race win). If this still does not separate them, the advantage goes to the runner who did most races and accumulated most total points during the year (e.g. a runner who scored points in eight races against a runner who only scored points in five races).

Let’s hope all of us can meet and play again on the trails of Asia in 2022!

2021 intended event calendar
ATM+announcement.001.jpg

Planning anything has become a game with an uncertain outcome in most sectors of public life during the covid 19 pandemic, and even more so when it concerns mass participation events and international country border crossings . Later than usual, but very happy to be able to do so, Asia Trail Master is now releasing the ‘intended’ 2021 event calendar for the merged 2020/2021 Asia Trail Master Championship and Grandmaster Quest. We felt that ‘intended’ describes the current calendar better than ‘provisional’, as it signals our dedication to make the below a reality, and give all runners a reliable guideline for what they can expect in the coming year. Nevertheless, more than ever this is a temperamental animal and we hope runners will understand and remain cautious when doing any planning.

Even though there are several positive sounds coming out in the media these weeks about the approval and availability of vaccinations soon, we must be realistic and accept that nothing much will change yet in the first quarter of 2021, and possibly even longer. We have therefore decided to focus very much on the second semester in the belief - or should it be ‘hope’ - that international trail running events will again become possible by then. Certainly, not every country will open its borders at the same time and we will remain flexible to make adjustments, if needed, and in agreement with the local event organisers.

In the mean time, following Thailand, Vietnam and Japan, Indonesia is one of the Asian countries that looks set to allow events to take place for domestic runners-only. Tahura Trail in Bandung, West Java, and the returning Coast to Coast Night Trail Ultra in Yogyakarta, Central Java, are scheduled for 23 January and 27 March, respectively. As we have approved in the other countries just mentioned, participants will be scoring points for the Asia Trail Master Championship but only their best of the two results will be retained if they run both events.

Tahura Trail will therefore once again be the official first race of the new season. More details will be coming out later this week.

The below event calendar is by no means complete. Some events originally scheduled for early in the year are postponed to an as yet undecided later date. These events, such as Cau Dat Farm Ultra in Vietnam and EcoTrail Al Ula in Saudi Arabia, have been left out of the calendar for the time being. Also UTKC in Thailand, one of the more popular early season events since several years, will be skipped in 2021 and substituted by a new Thai entry in our series in November: Doi Nhok Trail. Other new entries so far are High Trail 9 Peaks Ulju in South Korea and Mu Cang Chai Trail in Northwest Vietnam. The 9 Dragons in Hong Kong already announced the cancellation of the 2021 event a few weeks ago.

The Malaysia Mountain Trail Festival (MMTF) in Taiping will close the season on 18 December.

As we approach 2021 and draw a line under this difficult year, Asia Trail Master will keep providing updates to the calendar, as weil as launch a series of innovations to enter the new year full of optimism and energy. In this context, we also recommend everyone to get your friends together and team up for the 7 Missions virtual team challenge from 11 to 17 January!

Media release: 2020 ATM Championship merges with 2021 Championship series
ATM announcement.001.jpeg

MEDIA RELEASE / 12 August 2020 - After days of critical reflection and discussions with stakeholders, it has been formally decided that the 2020 Asia Trail Master Championship will be merged with next year’s 2021 Championship series. As country border closures and general travel restrictions are expected to be retained by most Asian governments in the foreseeable future, it has become virtually impossible to have a meaningful international running competition still this year. However, by merging and not cancelling, all runners who already scored ATM Championship and Grandmaster Quest points in the early months of 2020 will keep those points going into 2021. In addition, runners will score points as usual in the races that take place in the months yet to come - beginning with Vietnam Mountain Marathon and Korea 50K at the end of September. Important note: given all remaining races on the 2020 ATM calendar are expected to be limited to domestic or even just local residents, runners in Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and potentially Japan, who can all still join more than one race, will only carry their best result over to 2021.

By merging 2020 with 2021 we especially wanted to show respect for the runners who made significant efforts to travel to the early season races: Tahura Trail in Indonesia, EcoTrail Al Ula in Saudi Arabia and UT Koh Chang in Thailand,” says ATM founder and general manager Kris Van de Velde. “Going to UTKC in mid-February, for example, was already quite complicated as covid 19 had begun to spread around the region. At the same time, we feel we do not hamper the integrity of next year’s ATM Championship by allowing runners to carry over one or maybe two points results obtained this year. After all, elites need to deliver no fewer than five strong results if they want a realistic shot at the 2021 championship title. The current sole points leader in the 2020 men’s category, Hisashi Kitamura, was consulted and gave the idea the thumbs up. We are grateful for his sportsmanship.

As nobody will be crowned at the end of 2020, John Ellis and Veronika Vadovicova will logically remain the reigning ATM Champions for another year.

For Grandmaster aspirants, the Grandmaster Quest’s 2-year-time requirement has been ‘frozen’ since March and will remain frozen until at least the end of 2020 and possibly until 1 March 2021. The latter, obviously, depends on the development of the covid 19 crisis. As for the elites, all runners on the GM Quest will not lose any obtained points as long as the clock is not ticking.

The ATM Final, Borneo TMBT Ultra in Sabah, East Malaysia, is still on schedule for the weekend of 19/20 December. No Championship-decider anymore, but a new coveted prize will be introduced. More on this coming soon, as everyone in Malaysia is currently awaiting formal decisions by the government on event-related matters. In total, 12 events are still regarded as ‘active’ for 2020, although it is highly uncertain all 12 will effectively take place.

  • Tahura Trail (INA)

Rewatch EP4 of the Tale of the Trail
Tale+of+the+Trail+-+Episode+-+Poster+announcement+.001.jpg

The 4th episode of the Tale of the Trail was released on Friday, 12 June at 7 pm Hong Kong time. Labeled “Embracing the continent” , it focused largely on the virtual ATM 500 team challenge, its creators and the ‘winning’ team BSK Marina Loopers in Singapore.

Main takeways:

  • ATM 500 is an unexpected success. Creators Karen Geh and KC Tan talk with Kris about how it all came about and provide some statistics and further insight into the concept.

  • BSK Marina Loopers each talk about their experience of a ‘crazy hot day’ in Singapore last Monday, when the quartet ran 125km each to complete the 500k of ATM 500.

  • Amy Khor gets to know ‘Rocking’ Rie Sugaya better in the ‘Singapore Connection’ and learns of her background as a judoka and road runner, who got pulled into trail by a few friends

  • Alfan Impriadi announces the cancellation of the 2020 Ijen Trail event, but says the 2021 edition may take place in Q2 - April or May - rather than Q3

  • New-HALE explains the various uses and benefits of its excellent kinetape system in a great video

  • Hisashi KItamura has been keeping busy in his garage while awaiting the relaunch of the 2020 season to defend and extend his points lead in the ATM Championship

  • Shindy Patricia was this episode’s Mystery Guest, and the 2-star Grandmaster from Malang in East Java tells us about Cultra, yoga and mentoring a young generation of runners such as Christin Mutia

SIngapore's BSK Marina Loopers complete ATM 500 in 16 hours
ATM500+Regs.009.jpg

They had kind of announced it beforehand and they put their money where they mouths were: Singapore’s BSK Marina Loopers completed the inaugural ATM 500 Team Run Challenge as first of nearly 250 registered teams of four runners each. A few hours later it also turned out to be the only team to accomplish this amazing feat on a swelteringly hot day in the city. Rie Sugaya, Philippe Daniel, Yannick Duppich and Vincent Casanova delivered an outstanding ultrarunning performance and each completed an equal share of 125 km in less than 16 hours. In fact, the lady in the house, Japan’s Rie Sugaya, proved quickest in 13:34:08!

In the afternoon, reports were coming in of a few more teams with ambition to fulfill the 500k requirement by 10 pm. Team MKRC Boleh! in Kuala Lumpur, for instance, with seasoned runners Stephen Dundon, Chris Koelma, Thibault Bertrand and Jenny Holloway. Also the Filipino squad led by Neo Gentoleo - Vitargo - , Indonesia’s Team Arjuno with Thimo Kilberth (who climbed and descended Mt Batur along his way!) and Malaysia’s Team Challenger with Mohamed Affindi looked strong. Eventually they all got stuck around 420-400 KM. At cut-off time, it was suddenly another Singaporean Team that came closest to the 500k mark: the BSK Underdogs! The team consisting of Paulina Svoboda, Jerome Besnaud, Yan Moreno and Bernabe Sanchez ran 448 km! That means they only need a 15K “cool down” each to finish the ATM 500 tomorrow.

The first edition of ATM 500, dubbed “Run Asia, Run Virtual’ , is a creation by Sportlicious Malaysia in Penang and Asia Trail Master. Teams of four runners, of which one must be a woman, are required to complete a distance of 500 km in 14 days. Each day has maximum 18 running hours, subject to local regulations concerning the covid 19 crisis. After little more than a week of promotion, a shocking number of nearly 1000 people and 250 teams signed up for the challenge.

The ‘virtual’ event had not been designed as a pure race, but instead lays emphasis on the mass-participation aspect. The corona situation has led to a wide range of different measures set up by country governments, so that elites in a couple of places are seriously restricted in their options to compete for any potential top result. Nevertheless, we noted some outstanding performances on day 1.

The reigning women’s ATM Champion Veronika Vadovicova ran her 76K share of her “Trail Girls on Fire” team in a time of 7h27. That’s on a day with lots of rain and even a thunderstorm at the get-go early in the morning. Her teammates were clearly motivated to give it their best shot, too. Estzer Csillag - winner of TMMT 2019 - ran 8h07’ for 75K, Nikki Han did 78K in 8h27’ and experienced miler Habiba Benahmed took the largest share of the team with 100k in a time of 11h28’. Trail Girls on Fire is indeed a women’s-only team and sits in 10th place in the day’s ranking.

There’s been many wonderful achievements by individuals today that we cannot name them all, but it does strike us that the two gender categories were very well in balance! Other than Veronika’s team mentioned above, and Rie Sugaya as fastest of the ‘winning’ team in Singapore, in Thailand we saw both Cartoon Wipawee and Montha Suntornwit putting in over 100K runs, and so did Indonesia’s Christin Mutia and Philippines’ Ann Jilian Pulanco.

Further analysis of some known names on the ATM circuit, shows us that somehow John Ellis and Alessandro Sherpa ran virtually side-by-side for 71 KM despite being in different countries unaware of each other. Both locked in great times, too: Ellis did 73km in 5h54’ and Sherpa 71km in 5h52’. Let’s also mention that 2015 ATM Champion Arief Wismoyono had a quick day with 83km in 8:12:41. Over in Philippines, Kyle Antolin also managed a sub-10 hour 100K today.

UNOFFICIAL TOP 15 RANKING AFTER DAY 1

  1. BSK Marina Loopers - 500 KM

  3. The Challengers - 418 KM

  4. Vitargo PH - 408 KM

  13. Heal As One Runners 303 KM

  14. OCR Pilipinas 2 303 KM

18 teams have already managed more than 250 of the 500 km yesterday. Of those, Sherpa’s Angels are clearly the fastest at the moment. With an average speed of 11.13 km/h for 252 km, they are nearly 2 km/h quicker than... Trail Girls on Fire! The all-ladies team around Veronika Vadovicova is second fastest with an average speed of 9.30km/h over 330 km. In third place in this side-ranking comes Team Arjuno from Indonesia with an avs of 9.20 km.h over 405 km. Team OCR Pilipinas 2 is next with 8.79 km/h over 303 km. Next are the BSK Underdogs from Singapore with 8.66 km/h over 448 km, who thus actually as a team ran at a faster pace than the BSK Marina Loopers... but couldn't keep it up for the full 500km. In fifth is Team Hallasan from South Korea with 8.48 km/h, followed by the winning team of ATM 500, BSK Marina Loopers, with an avs of 8.43 km/h.
